Open Houses

The LIPDFTC typically hosts a Spring and Fall Open House for prospective new members to come out, meet the club and experience a training day. Prospective members are also often welcome on other training days, schedules permitting, by making prior arrangements with a Board member.

Regular Training Days

Weather permitting, the LIPDFTC trains on most Sunday mornings starting at sunrise from September through May, with the exception of January when our grounds are not available. Check with a club member or visit our events page for information on Open Houses, Fun Tests and Hunt Tests. You can always email info@LIPDFTC.com for the latest training schedule and start times.

Recommended Training Gear

Gun Dog Supply is a great resource for all of the gear below, and beyond.

  • Check Cord
  • Leash
  • Whistle
  • Bird Bag for quail
  • Whatever training collars you use (choke chain, e-collar, pinch collar etc)
  • Starter pistol/pop gun
  • Blaze Orange Vest or other blaze orange clothing
  • Water bottle for your dog
  • Bug/tick spray
  • First aid kit for humans and dogs

Safety & Training Protocol

  • All dogs must be under your control at all times; keep dogs leashed or in crates or stake outs in the parking lot and never leave dogs unattended or unleashed in the lot -- it's not safe!
  • Check cords should be used in the training field, and if necessary on the course. This goes especially for puppies and unbroke dogs who don't yet know recall or "whoa!" commands 100% of the time.
  • All members should wear blaze orange; it's required on shooting days regardless of whether you're in the shooting field or not
  • No dogs can run the back course while shooting is in progress
  • Always be aware of your surroundings when shooting is in progress
  • DRIVE SLOWLY -- 10 mph or less and with caution as you come in down the road!! We have no tolerance for speeding as dogs could be running and it is unsafe.
  • Reminder we now have a $5/dog fee for shooting weekends to cover the cost of ammo and permitting for anyone who wants to shoot over their dog.
  • All members are required to participate in at least one clean-up event per year, volunteer at an event, and participate in selling raffle tickets or whatever the annual fundraiser may be.
  • Don’t linger when your turn is over, arrive on time or come early, end on a good note and even if you want to continue, move on so that someone else can have their turn (including trainers).
  • Members that assist on a regular basis on training weekends are not paid. They have their own dogs to train too. We encourage all members to learn to plant their own birds and help other members whenever they can.
  • Ask questions, watch more experienced dogs and get involved. There is no better way to learn whether you want to hunt, field trial or enter a hunt test.
